Do I Need Permission to Cut Down a Tree in Cirencester?
If you’re planning to remove a tree from your property in Cirencester, it’s important to understand whether you need permission before starting work. At Prestige Tree Care Gloucester, we’re often asked, “Can I legally cut down a tree in my garden?” The answer depends on a few key factors, especially local council regulations and the type of tree involved.
 Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs)
Some trees in Cirencester are protected by a Tree Preservation Order (TPO) issued by the local authority. If your tree is protected, you must get permission from Cotswold District Council before carrying out any work – including pruning, felling, or root removal. Carrying out unauthorised work on a protected tree can result in fines of up to £20,000.
 Conservation Areas
Cirencester has several conservation areas to protect the character of historic parts of the town. If your tree is located within one of these areas and has a trunk diameter of more than 75mm (at 1.5m height), you’ll need to give the council at least six weeks’ written notice before starting any work.
 How Do I Check?
You can check if a tree is protected by:
- Contacting Cotswold District Council’s planning or arboricultural department
- Checking TPO maps or the council’s online planning portal
- Asking a professional tree surgeon (like us!) to carry out a free inspection
 When You Don’t Need Permission:
- The tree is not under a TPO or in a conservation area
- The tree is dead, dangerous, or has fallen in a storm (you may still need to notify the council)
- The tree is smaller than 75mm diameter at 1.5m height
 Our Advice:
Always check before starting any tree work. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help with checks, applications, and guidance as part of our service.
